Day 8 - Waimea to Kona / Hawi to Waikoloa

At last the ride is finally winding down. Today is our last day of riding. The group from Waimea has a 40+ mile ride starting with a 8 mile downhill to the coast, followed by the hot and gruelling ride to Kona.

Our group starts with a 19 mile ride to Kawaihe followed by a 10 mile sprint to the resort hotels in the Waikoloa area.

This route along the coast is part of the Ironmant Triathlon races. It is extremely hot with wide road shoulders as your only consolation. You can physically see the heat radiating from the pavement. Absolutely no trees to shade you from the beating sun. The lava flow on the roadside only helps to keep you warm.

There are a few points of interests along this route. The Puako Petroglyphs has a good collection of rock carvings. The ancient Hawaiian culture did not have any written language. Rock carvings were their main medium of preserving history.
