Further south is the Puukohola Heiau, a restored Hawaiian temple still used by the locals for offerings. Story has it that Kamehameha built this massive temple after seeing it in his dream as a condition for uniting the islands. On its inauguration, the last opposing king attended but was greeted by spears leading to his death. In the end, Kamehameha prevailed and became the first king of a united Hawaii. This stretch of the trip is by far the most boring. There is nothing to see. Amuse yourself by reading messages left on the roadside using white rocks. From names to love messages, it is all there. With the heat and headwinds, this is a mentally and physically challenging ride. Console yourself by thinking if you can do it, then maybe you have a chance at the Ironman race. If you are going in a group, suggest taking turns drafting each other. Make this your chance to do a partial Ironman ! |
