Folding Bike Softcase

Have you ever dreamed of a collapsible case you can fold when you're done ? Maybe this is as close a case you can find without breaking the bank. Made out of a heavy duty 600D Super Durable Polyester, case measures 28.5" x 22" x 15". It has a #10 heavy duty main zipper opening on top, top handles made out of 2.50" heavy duty webbing, tie buckles on the side, front zippered pocket and a side handle.

In it's original softsided form, the case is strong enough for bus or train travel. To extend it's range of use like for air travel, you can make your own protective sides to protect your bike from abuse. You can use materials like veneer plywood, plastic sheets or even cardboard (that's what you see on the right). You can design your shield so it folds like an oregami puzzle. When you're done, fold the shield and bring it with you.

The case is designed for travel (rather than commute) as your folder has to be slightly disassembled to fit into the case. Follow the following steps as we fold our travel ready Helios into the bag.

Note: The dimensions of the case exceeds the airline legal limit of 62" (length + width + height). Since it looks like a regular duffel bag, chances are it will be treated as a regular bag without the surcharge. We do not however guarantee that all airlines will extend the same courtesy.

To make the case conform to the 62" airline limit, use 2 cross straps to compress the width to 12" from 15" and the width of 28.5" to 28".

How to Pack your Helios into the Folding Bike Softcase

Above is the picture of the softcase in its collapsed form. On the right is a protective shield we made out of cardboard and tape. By designing it as an oregami type shield (see red lines), you can fold it compact when your done (see below).

Protective case unfolded inside the softcase.

Packing requires some disassembly. Remove both wheels, pedals, seatpost, sliding stem and bar.

Unbolt the lower leg of the rack and fold. It works best with the Dahon steel rack as the legs are foldeable. If you have a regular rack, you may have to remove rack from all points of attachment.

Now fold the frame making sure the fork goes lengthwise for a narrower fold.

To make sure the chain does not fall off, get twisted to a point where it can't be assembled without breaking the chain - secure it to the the chainring using a string, bungee cord etc.
