Custom Bike Design

Bicycles have a surprisingly long history. The first two-wheeled, human-powered vehicle was the dandy horse or Laufmaschine (German for “running machine”). The rider would simply sit astride it and push it along with their feet while walking or running. Unlike later velocipedes, the dandy horse did not have pedals. “Velocipede” comes from the Latin for “fast foot” and is a word applied to any wheeled vehicle driven by human power. There is some debate as to when pedals were added to the velocipede’s design, and who first conceived them. Some claim a Scottish blacksmith made the first pedal-powered velocipede in 1839, while others credit the French in the 1860’s. The French did produce the first mass-produced bicycles in the 1860’s, and they also coined the word “bicycle.”
